A DIFFERENT APPROACH

Why We Formulate Without Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the most common ingredients in handmade soap. Soapmakers often use it because it contributes to a firm bar, cleansing properties and plenty of bubbly lather.

But it isn't the only way to make beautiful soap.

When we developed Curtis & Kin, we wanted to create our formulas differently from the beginning—not simply remove coconut oil from a conventional recipe.

That led us to babassu oil.

Babassu gives us another way to create the cleansing experience and satisfying lather we want while keeping every Curtis & Kin soap free from coconut oil and olive oil.

OUR KEY INGREDIENT

Why Babassu?

One of the first questions people have about soap without coconut oil is whether it can still produce a good lather. It can. Our formulas bring together oils and butters that each play a different role in the finished bar.

Babassu Oil

Babassu oil comes from the kernels of the babassu palm. Its fatty-acid profile makes it particularly useful in soapmaking, where it can contribute to a firm bar and rich, bubbly lather.

Castor Oil

Castor oil helps support and stabilize lather, complementing the other oils in our formulations.

Plant Oils & Butters

Depending on the bar, we pair babassu with thoughtfully selected oils and butters such as kokum butter and safflower oil to create balanced, beautiful bars.
The result is a coconut-oil-free soap that doesn't require coconut oil to deliver the experience you expect from a well-made bar.

GOOD INGREDIENTS MATTER

Why Is Coconut Oil Used in So Much Soap?

Coconut oil is popular among soapmakers because it helps create a firm bar and contributes to a bubbly lather. But it isn't the only way to make beautiful soap. We chose to take a different approach so people looking for soap without coconut oil have another option without giving up the experience of a well-made bar.

Frequently asked questions

Is every Curtis & Kin soap coconut-free?

Yes. Every Curtis & Kin soap bar is formulated without coconut oil.

Is Curtis & Kin soap also olive-oil-free?

Yes. Our soap formulations are made without olive oil as well as coconut oil.

What do you use instead of coconut oil in soap?

Babassu oil plays an important role in our soap formulations. Depending on the bar, we combine it with thoughtfully selected ingredients such as kokum butter, safflower oil and castor oil.

Does soap without coconut oil still lather?

Yes. Coconut oil isn't required to create a satisfying soap lather. Our formulations use ingredients including babassu and castor oil to help create the bubbly, creamy lather we want from our bars.

Is babassu oil coconut oil?

No. Babassu and coconut are different plants. Babassu oil comes from the babassu palm, while coconut oil comes from the coconut palm. They have some similar properties that make them useful in soapmaking, but they are distinct ingredients.

Why is coconut oil used in so much handmade soap?

Coconut oil is popular in soapmaking because it can contribute hardness, cleansing properties and bubbly lather to a finished bar. However, it isn't the only oil capable of performing those functions, which is one reason we chose to formulate our soaps differently.

Is coconut-free soap good for sensitive skin?

People with sensitive skin often pay close attention to the ingredients in the products they use. However, everyone's skin is different, and being coconut-free doesn't automatically make a product appropriate for every skin condition or sensitivity.

If you prefer a simple, unscented option, Kin is a good place to start. Always review the complete ingredient list before using a new product.

Is coconut-free the same as coconut-allergy-safe?

No. We don't use those terms interchangeably. Anyone with a diagnosed allergy should review the complete ingredient list of an individual product and follow their healthcare professional's guidance regarding ingredients they need to avoid.

Which coconut-free soap should I try first?

If you want something simple and unscented, start with Kin. If you prefer additional ingredients such as clays, botanicals, goat milk, honey or essential oils, explore the rest of our coconut-free soap collection to find the bar that fits your preferences.

SIMPLE. THOUGHTFUL. FOR EVERYDAY LIFE.
