Can You Wash Your Face With Bar Soap?

In Short

Yes—but not every bar is made for your face. The better question isn't whether a cleanser comes in a bar or a bottle. It's whether it was intentionally formulated for facial skin.

One of the questions we hear more than almost any other is, "Can I use this on my face?" We understand why people ask. For years, many of us were told that facial cleansers belonged in bottles while bar soap belonged in the shower. Somewhere along the way, those two ideas became almost inseparable. We believed it ourselves until Janae started making soap and we realized how different one bar can be from another. That's when we stopped asking whether a cleanser came in a bar or a bottle and started asking a much better question: What was it made to do?

The longer we've made soap, the more we've realized that appearances can be misleading. Two bars may look almost identical sitting beside one another, yet be formulated for completely different purposes. The same is true of liquid cleansers. The package tells you very little. What matters are the decisions behind the formula and the intention of the person who created it. That's one of the reasons we've always tried to explain not just what we make, but why we make it.

For us, that question eventually led to Cleanse. Interestingly, though, Cleanse didn't begin as a bar at all.

It started as a powder

Long before there was a Cleanse bar, there was Cleanse Powder. We loved the idea of a simple facial cleanser that could be mixed fresh with water each time you used it. It fit the kind of skincare we were drawn to—minimal, uncomplicated, and thoughtfully made. Over time it became one of our favorite products, and it quickly became a favorite for many of our customers as well.

As much as we loved the powder, we also understood something else. Some mornings you're rushing to get ready for work. Some evenings you're simply tired. Reaching for a powder, adding water, and mixing it into a paste isn't difficult, but it does take an extra step. The more we listened to customers—and the more we paid attention to our own routines—the more we realized we wanted that same thoughtful cleansing experience in a form that felt even simpler.

That's where the idea for the Cleanse bar came from. We weren't trying to replace the powder. We were trying to offer another way to enjoy it. Some people genuinely love the ritual of mixing a fresh cleanser in their hands. Others appreciate the convenience of reaching for a bar that's ready to use the moment they turn on the faucet. We understood both because we found ourselves appreciating both.

Choosing the right tool

That experience reinforced something we've come to believe about skincare. Good products shouldn't compete with one another. They should serve different purposes.

A body bar doesn't have to become a facial cleanser simply because it's gentle. A facial cleanser doesn't need to become an all-purpose product to prove its value. We actually think there's something refreshing about products having a clear purpose. It makes choosing them much simpler, and it helps us avoid buying things that promise to do everything but rarely do any one thing particularly well.

That's the approach Janae took while developing the Cleanse bar. Rather than asking how many claims could fit on the label, she focused on creating a facial cleansing bar she'd genuinely want to use herself. Every ingredient had to earn its place. Every adjustment had to make the finished bar a little better than the one before it. That's the kind of work most people never see, but it's also the part we enjoy the most.

A routine you can keep

One thing we've learned over the years is that the best skincare routine isn't usually the most complicated one. It's the one you'll actually keep. We've all started routines with the best intentions, only to find ourselves skipping steps a few weeks later because they simply didn't fit into everyday life.

That's one of the reasons convenience matters more than people sometimes admit. Convenience isn't about cutting corners. It's about creating products that naturally fit into the rhythm of an ordinary day. For some people, that's Cleanse Powder. For others, it's the Cleanse bar. Neither choice is better. They're simply different ways of arriving at the same destination.

So, can you wash your face with bar soap?

Absolutely—but choose one that was created with that purpose in mind. We've found that the best products are rarely the ones trying to do everything. They're the ones made thoughtfully enough to do one job exceptionally well.

Looking back, we're grateful Cleanse began as a powder because it taught us exactly what we valued in a facial cleanser. The bar that followed wasn't a replacement. It was simply the next chapter in the same story, created for the mornings when life moves a little faster and simplicity matters a little more.
